Key West Shrimp Boats
Ink and watercolor, printed on archival art paper
$45.00
Archival prints of original Key West paintings by Edmund Fratus. Framing, glass, and matting available.
I paint calm reflective scenes for coastal vacation homes.
Each piece begins as an ink drawing made on location in Key West, then finished in watercolor. Prints are produced on archival art paper so the color holds its depth for decades, with framing, glass, and matting available on request.
I am also a writer. Alongside the paintings you will find essays and studio notes in the art journal, and I welcome conversations with publishers.

The harbor is never still, so I start with the rigging. Ink lines go down before the light shifts, because the masts are the one part of the scene that holds its shape while everything else moves.
Watercolor comes after. I let the wash pool where the hulls meet their reflections and I try not to correct it. The bloom that forms on its own is closer to the truth of that water than anything I could place on purpose.
By the time the fleet heads out, the paper has already told me whether the painting will be calm or restless. I have learned to accept its answer.
The Southernmost House has outlasted hurricanes, owners, and fashions. It has been a home, a hotel, a rumor, and a photograph in a million albums.
Painting it felt less like invention and more like taking dictation. Every porch rail and every frond had already been arranged by a century of weather, and my job was to keep up.
What I wanted was the quiet of the place at mid morning, before the street fills. Serene, tropical, a little worn. That is the Key West I keep returning to.
I write the way I paint. Short passages, plain light, and a coastline that refuses to sit still for a portrait.
The manuscript in progress follows a season on the water: the crews, the storms that arrive without permission, and the long flat afternoons in between. It is illustrated with ink studies made on location.
If you publish coastal essays, illustrated non fiction, or regional memoir, I would welcome a conversation. Reach me through the contact form below.
